Positive and negative sides of contraceptive drugs

Contraception, i.e. the various methods of preventing pregnancy, has both advantages and disadvantages, which you should consider well before deciding to use it. Below you will find a discussion of both the positive and negative aspects of hormonal contraception, especially the contraceptive pill.

Positive sides of contraceptive drugs:

  • Effectiveness: The contraceptive pill offers a very high level of protection against pregnancy of approximately 99%, provided it is used regularly and correctly.
  • Regulation of the menstrual cycle: Many women appreciate the contraceptive pill for its ability to regulate their cycle. For those struggling with irregular periods, this is a significant benefit.
  • Reduction of PMS symptoms: Hormonal pills can alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), such as menstrual pain, mood swings and swelling.
  • Protection against certain diseases: Regular use of hormonal contraception can reduce the risk of ovarian cysts, uterine cancer or pelvic inflammatory disease.
  • Better control over family planning: Contraception enables women to have more control over their pregnancy planning, which can help with professional and personal plans.

Negative sides of contraceptive drugs:

  • Side effects: Some women may experience adverse effects such as nausea, headaches, weight gain, breast tenderness or mood changes. Usually these symptoms disappear after a few months, although they may persist in some.
  • Risk of serious complications: Although rare, the contraceptive pill may increase the risk of thrombosis, heart attack or stroke, especially in women who smoke or suffer from blood clotting problems.
  • Regularity of intake: The effectiveness of hormonal contraception depends on regularity of intake. Skipping one or more doses can reduce the level of protection against pregnancy.
  • No protection against STIs: The contraceptive pill does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If there is a risk of such infections, additional methods of protection, such as condoms, must be used.
  • Available by prescription only: In Poland, contraceptive pills are only available by prescription, which can be a barrier for some women, especially those with limited access to a doctor.

Summary

The contraceptive pill is one of the most effective forms of preventing pregnancy, but like any method, it has its advantages and disadvantages. Before opting for this form of protection, it is worth consulting your doctor to choose the option that best suits your lifestyle and health.
